The Judge's ruling
Ruling: The Department of Energy's winter guidance is 68°F while you're home and awake, lower while asleep or away, and it estimates roughly 1% savings per degree per 8 hours. So Sam has the government on his side. But Sam is arguing about money and Riley is arguing about comfort, and those are different cases. 70 during the day gives Riley two of her four degrees, 67 overnight gives Sam his savings where nobody feels them, and a programmable thermostat means neither of you touches the dial.
Sentence: Sam buys Riley a very good blanket. Riley stops adjusting the thermostat after 10 p.m. The schedule goes in the thermostat, not in the group chat.
