Cake or pie?
Cake has a holiday. Pie has a crust. One is for celebrating, one is for eating. Both sides, a ruling, and a sentence. Below: both sides as they'd actually put it, then the ruling The Judge gives when two people bring this one into a Settle It room.
Both sides
Cake. Every celebration in human history has a cake. Layers, frosting, a candle. Pie is what you make when you have too much fruit.
Pie. Crust is the greatest thing bakers ever invented, and pie doesn't need a party to justify itself. Cake is 40% frosting by weight.
The Judge's ruling
Ruling: On pure eating merit, pie: a good crust is harder to make than a good sponge, pie holds its own without decoration, and nobody has ever scraped the crust off a pie the way people scrape frosting off a cake. On occasions, cake: the candle tradition is not going anywhere, and a pie with candles in it looks like a cry for help. The court declines to rule that either is 'better,' because they are not competing for the same job.
Sentence: Pie on any night that isn't someone's birthday. Cake on birthdays, and Eli eats a full slice without commenting on the frosting ratio.
