Group chat with AI: ChatGPT vs. Poe vs. SharedChat

Three products now let several people share one AI conversation. They look similar in a screenshot and they're built for completely different jobs. Here's what each one actually is, so you can pick without reading a marketing page (including ours).

ChatGPT group chats

OpenAI rolled these out to everyone, including the free plan, in late 2025. You invite up to 20 people with a link, anyone in the group can share that link onward, and ChatGPT decides for itself when to jump in or you can mention it directly. You can give each group its own custom instructions for tone. OpenAI's own examples include "settling a friendly debate with an impartial referee."

Best for: a group that already lives in ChatGPT and wants the AI in the thread for anything at all. The catch: "impartial" is something you have to ask for, per chat, in your own words — and nothing holds it to that.

Poe group chats

Poe's version scales bigger — up to 200 people — and its whole point is choice of model: you can bring many different AIs and creator-made bots into one room. It syncs across desktop and mobile.

Best for: comparing several AIs on the same question, or a big community. The catch: it's a general tool with no idea what your conversation is for.

SharedChat

SharedChat is narrower on purpose. Every conversation is a room with a job: Settle It (a judge who must hear both sides before ruling), Relationships and Co-Parenting (coordinators told in writing never to pick a winner), Parenting, Friend Groups, and a plain General room. The fairness isn't a prompt you type — it's the room. Co-Parenting adds a calm-down step for heated messages. The rooms are tested on the hard conversations, where they point to real help instead of "compromise."

Best for: the personal stuff — a couple, two households, a friend group — where the point is being fair to everyone in the chat. The catch: smaller, newer, and not trying to be your work assistant.
